West Ham Women scored two first-half goals in a 2-1 Barclays WSL win over London City Lionesses.

West Ham’s Vivianne Asseyi forced goalkeeper Elene Lete to dig her shot out from inside the post, but the Hammers did take the lead when Saraina Piubel won possession and sent Kelly Gago through to go around the keeper and slot home.

Daniëlle van de Donk brought a save from Constance Piccaud-Inconnu, and the ball dropped to Alexia Putellas, who fired her shot over the bar.

A couple of minutes after the interval, Gago won the ball, passed to Riko Ueki, who sent Asseyi on a run to double the advantage.

London City had the ball in the back of the net midway through th second half but it was disallowed for offside.

The visitors halved the deficit with 16 minutes to play, as Van de Donk scored with a near-post backheel from a Putellas cross.

But West Ham held on without too much worry to take their first points of the season.
