Young Lionesses Thrash Tanzania at the U20 Women’s World Cup

The Young Lionesses second group stage game at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup saw Rachel Maltby hit a first-half hat-trick.

Princess Ademiluyi struck early on, turning home Vivienne Lia’s cross at the back post.

Ademiluyi was then pushed in the area by Lidya Kabambo and Rachel Maltby stepped up to put away the resulting penalty.

England goalkeeper Katie Cox had to save with her feet as Winfrida Gerald got through on goal.

Maltby got a second goal from the spot after Vera Jones was clipped from behind by Elizabeth Mwimi in the box.

In first-half stoppage time, Maltby had her hat-trick complete, capping a brilliant team move by coolly slotting home at the back post of Lily Dent’s cross.

Ademiluyi was denied by the bar after earlier hitting the upright but Tanzania got a goal back as Diana Mnally’s looping cross hit the far post and despite Cox’s efforts, Jamila Mnunduka forced the ball home.

Jessie Gale poked home Lia’s cross, while Cecily Wellesley-Smith had a goal ruled out for offside, as did Winfrida Gerald.

England sit second in the group and face leaders Brazil at Stadion Miejski in Poland on Friday 11 September, 2pm BST and live on DAZN and FIFA+.

Brazil beat Canada 3-0 on Tuesday, while in Group A the results were: Benin 0-8 Argentina, Poland 3-1 Mexico.
