Newcastle United made it five wins from five with a derby victory away to basement side Durham.
Beth Lumsden hit the crossbar for the Magpies, and they took the lead later in the first half when Hildur Antonsdóttir scored following a corner kick.
Jordan Nobbs doubled the lead past the hour mark, after Martha Thomas’s initial effort was parried by Catriona Sheppard.
Thomas tucked home a late third goal from a cross by Lumsden.
Sunderland beat Leicester City 3-1 to stay just two points short of the leaders.
Katie Kitching hit a 10th-minute opener from outside the box but Asmita Ale equalised after a Foxes’ corner.
Elise Hughes restored the lead after half time when set up by Katy Watson, Sanni Franssi extending the advantage with the help of Kitching.
Ipswich Town took the points away to Sheffield United to hold third spot in the table.
Ipswich had the lead approaching the hour mark as Meg Hornby struck from outside the box, before Princess Ademiluyi found the top corner from distance.
Connie Scofield took the chance provided by Charlie Devlin to get the Blades back in the match.
Nottingham Forest remain in fourth position after seeing off Burnley with a double from Espås.
Forest scored close to the interval when Tuva Espås tucked away a ball delivered by Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah.
Half an hour later, Espås had her second goal of the match.
Bristol City came from behind to defeat the Saints.
Southampton scored in the first minute through Freya Jupp, assisted by Ellie Brazil.
Bristol were back on level terms before the hour thanks to Lotta Lindström, and Sophie Ingle completed the turnaround with help from Esther Morgan.
Watford made it three draws in five games, with four goals shared at Wolves.
Wolves’ Georgia Marshall headed home from a Melissa Lawley corner, but the hosts hit back with a six-minute brace after the hour mark.
Poppy Wilson scored from Aoibheann Clancy’s set piece, and Phoebie Poole headed in from Grace Neville’s delivery.
Charlotte Greengrass brought Wolves back level from the spot after Grace Neville’s handball in the penalty area.
