England will meet Sweden in the UEFA Women’s EURO quarter-finals after over-running Wales in the first half.

Group D:

France 5-2 Netherlands

England 6-1 Wales

Georgia Stanway gave England an early lead from the spot, when the foul given against Carrie Jones on the midfielder was upgraded to a penalty following a VAR check.

Ella Toone finished at the second attempt, Lily Woodham clearing her first off the line from an Alessia Russo ball across the six-yard box.

Hannah Hampton needed two goes to hold onto an Angharad James shot, shortly after Toone crossed for Lauren Hemp to head home despite the efforts of Olivia Clark.

Toone put one on a plate for Russo, Rachel Rowe and Jess Fishlock both went close to a reply before the break.

Beth Mead made it 5-0 with a sharp turn and finish, Hannah Cain found the roof of the net in response from a pass by Fishlock but Aggie Beever-Jones headed home a Mead delivery.

Keira Walsh was denied a late goal with a super tip-over from Clark.

France’s place in the last eight began to come under some threat from the Netherlands but three goals in a six-minute spell made sure of their progress.

Sandie Toletti fired France in front from a Marie-Antoinette Katoto cross but the Dutch soon levelled, as Chasity Grant brought a save from Pauline Peyraud-Magnin but Victoria Pelova netted the follow up.

The Netherlands had turned it round by half time, Salma Bacha making a hash of an attempted clearance to concede an own goal.

France struck back three times in quick succession to lead 4-2, Delphine Cascarino playing in Katoto to score before netting from 20 yards and then finishing off a Katoto effort that came off both posts.

Sakina Karchaoui made it 5-2 from the spot in added time, Kerstin Casparij having taken down Melween N’Dongala in the area.
