England Women edged Spain 1-0 to make it three straight wins in World Cup Qualifying League A Group 3.

The Lionesses got off to the perfect start with a third-minute goal, Alessia Russo having a shot despite being on the deck and Lauren Hemp’s follow-up seen to have just crossed the line.

Hemp and Lucy Bronze combined superbly, but only for the former to be denied by the post.

Ona Batlle had a great opportunity but sent it over the crossbar, with England maintaining their advantage to half-time.

Olga Carmona hit the bar after the interval but the ball stayed out, while Lucia Kendall sent a decent chance over the top at the other end.

Vicky Lopez hit the post for Spain and also forced a save from Hannah Hampton, who pulled off a crucial 90th-minute stop from Edna Imade’s header as a lot of late pressure was withstood.
