Athlone Town win Women’s Champions League qualifying group final

Ireland’s Athlone Town got through the UEFA Women’s Champions League 1st Qualifying Round, beating Croatian opposition with three first-half goals.

Madie Gibson scored twice for the UWCL debutants against ZNK Agram to the delight the crowd of 1,715 at Athlone Town Stadium, in-between setting up Hannah Waesh to net the other goal.

Athlone now face Icelandic side Breiðablik in a second qualifying round semi-final in the Netherlands on 27 August.

Northern Ireland’s Cliftonville bowed out 2-1 in Georgia to Lanchkhuti, conceding twice in the space of 60 seconds around the 55th minute. Abbie Magee pulled a goal back but at the end of the 90 minutes.

Group 1 – 3rd Place: Flora 0-1 AEK Athens. Final: Riga 1-2 Racing Union Luxembourg

Group 2 – 3rd Place: Anenii Noi 0-3 Budućnost. Final: Swieqi United 1-2 Spartak Myjava

Group 3 – 3rd Place: NSA Sofia 0-4 NSÍ Runavík. Final: Pyunik 0-4 Ljuboten

Group 4 – Final: ABB Fomget 3-1 Kirayat Gat

Group 5 – Final: Athlone Town 3-0 ZNK Agram

Group 6 – Final: Cliftonville 1-2 Lanchkhuti
