Wales Women defeated Switzerland 3-2 in a friendly international match played in Jerez, Spain, for their first victory of the year.

Sophie Ingle headed Wales in front after the Swiss failed to clear a volleyed cross from Ceri Holland.

But the lead did not last long, as Aurelie Csillag squeezed a shot past Safia Middleton-Patel at her near post.

Rachel Rowe sent a great chance over the bar from the edge of the box, and Carrie Jones also went close after another good move.

Ingle played a perfectly-weighted ball over the top to Hannah Cain, who chipped the goalkeeper Elvira Herzog from 20 yards to restore the advantage.

Debutant Laura Hughes and Lily Woodham came off the bench for the second half, and within 25 seconds the former set up the latter to make it 3-1.

Iman Beney made the most of an opportunity to cut the deficit, beating one defender and putting her shot between the legs of another into the bottom corner.

Mared Griffiths nearly scored a fourth goal for Wales, who had to endure some tense moments to claim the win.
