Barclays Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea eventually secured all three points against a battling London City Lionesses side.

Wassa Sangare redeemed herself with a superb clearance after giving the ball away and seeing Erin Cuthbert’s shot beat goalkeeper Elene Lete.

But Chelsea were ahead in just the sixth minute, as Sydney Baltimore’s cross presented Ellie Carpenter with a tap-in at the far post.

London City could have levelled late in the half but Izzy Goodwin fired over the top.

Hannah Hampton had to rush off her line to take the ball off Goodwin’s feet, then during added time Sam Kerr sealed the victory by catching the keeper off her line.
