UEFA Women’s Champions League Final Targeted by Cardiff and Dublin

Both the FA of Ireland and FA of Wales have formally declared their interest in hosting the 2029 UEFA Women’s Champions League Final.

Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium and Dublin’s Aviva Stadium face challenges in hosting the final from Parc Olympique Lyonnais and St. Jakob-Park in Basel.

In 2017, Wales staged both the UWCL final at Cardiff City Stadium and the UCL Final at the Principality Stadium.

The FAW stated that: ‘Securing the 2029 Women’s Champions League Final would represent an opportunity to inspire greater participation in the sport, strengthen the grassroots network, and enhance pathways for young players. The bid is designed to ensure that the impact of the event extends far beyond the 90 minutes on the pitch, creating a legacy that supports the continued development of women’s football in Wales and be a catalyst towards increased attendances at Women’s sporting events in the country.’

The FAI said: ‘By submitting an expression of interest, this enables the FAI, alongside the Aviva Stadium, the Department of Culture, Communications and S port, and Dublin City Council, to review the forthcoming UEFA bid requirements in full and explore how the event could deliver lasting value for the game in Ireland. 

‘The Association will consider submitting a formal bid based on a clear understanding of the legacy potential, delivery feasibility and financial considerations on the back of engagement with all partners as part of this exploratory phase.’

The Ullevaal Stadion in Oslo will host this season‘s final, while the 2027 showpiece is set for Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw.

Lyon and Basel are again among bidders for 2028 alongside San Mamés Stadium (Bilbao) and Rams Park (Istanbul), with the final hosts for that and the 2029 edition set to be appointed in September 2026.
