Newcastle United Women won 1-0 against Bristol City in the Barclays WSL 2, watched by a crowd of nearly 2,000 at Ashton Gate.
After a goalless first half, Bristol City started the second period strongly, and Signe Markvardsen saw her cross tipped onto the bar by Anna Tamminen.
But Newcastle made a 51st-minute breakthrough when Martha Thomas struck the post and Kathleen McGovern was on hand to turn the rebound into the far corner, out of reach of goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy.
McGovern might have doubled the lead when played through on the right of the box but failed to find the target.
Bristol had the ball in the back of the net deep into stoppage time, but it was ruled out for offside.
While Newcastle go top of the table ahead of Sunday’s fixtures, Bristol City remain bottom with back-to-back defeats.
