Bristol City Women Appoint Lauren Holiday as New Board Chair

Bristol City Women have announced that Lauren Holiday has joined the club’s Board of Directors, taking up the role of Chair.

The World Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medalist brings a unique dual perspective to the role, as both a decorated player and an active investor in the women’s game.

In 2024, Holiday joined the board of Mercury13, which acquired a majority stake in Bristol City Women last year, and has worked closely with Mercury13’s management across all football matters as the group has expanded its portfolio of women’s football clubs across Europe.

Holiday joins Bristol City Women’s board as its fourth member, alongside existing directors Mario Malavé, Lisa Knights, and Brian Lasky. The appointment extends her board presence across the Mercury13 group as Holiday also serves on the board of FC Badalona Women, as well as that of Mercury13.

Renowned for her versatility, vision, and leadership, Holiday is widely regarded as one of the most complete players of her generation. A dynamic presence across midfield and attack, she was the engine behind the U.S. Women’s National Team’s attacking success across 133 international appearances, helping the team claim back-to-back Olympic gold medals at Beijing 2008 and London 2012 before crowning her international career with a FIFA Women’s World Cup title in 2015.

At club level, she was instrumental in launching the NWSL with FC Kansas City, helping the team win back-to-back league championships in 2014 and 2015 and earning inaugural league MVP honours in 2013. Her courage and character were tested off the pitch as much as on it: after retiring in 2016, she was diagnosed with a benign brain tumour while pregnant with her first child, and her strength and grace through recovery made her an inspiration far beyond the sport.

Since retiring from play, Lauren has channelled the same competitive drive that defined her career into advancing the women’s game off the pitch, becoming one of football’s most respected voices on investment, growth, and long-term value creation in women’s sport. Her impact extends far beyond the boardroom. Together with her husband, Jrue Holiday, she has used her platform to champion social justice, health equity, and community empowerment through initiatives including the Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Impact Fund.

In recognition of her enduring commitment to service, the NWSL established the Lauren Holiday Impact Award, presented annually to a player who demonstrates outstanding contributions to their local community.

On joining the board of Bristol City Women, Holiday said: “It is no secret how passionate I am about investment in the women’s game and the past two years at Mercury13 have really delivered on that front. Bristol City has a rich history in the women’s game and I am committed to supporting the sporting organization in whichever way I can in this next chapter for the club.”
