Spain beat England Women 4-0 in the World Cup qualifying League A group match in Mallorca to replace them at the top on goal difference.

Spain struck inside 20 minutes as England lost possession, and Patri Guijarro beat Georgia Stanway before hitting a 25-yard shot that took a deflection into the bottom corner.

Alexia Putellas doubled the lead by half-time following a ball from Mariona Caldentey, her powerful strike unable to be parried beyond the far post by goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

Stanway was narrowly wide from 20 yards out, but the Lionesses fell further behind as Putellas doubled her tally despite an initial block on the goal line by Lucy Bronze.

Hampton tipped Guijarro’s header onto the crossbar as England continued to struggle to resist a rampant Spain.

Aitana Bonmati came off the bench to swiftly pick out fellow substitute Claudia Pina, who fired home the fourth goal.

Sarina Wiegman’s side finish the group fixtures at home to Ukraine on Tuesday, while Spain visit Iceland.
