Despite a red card, Bayern Munich managed to hold Barcelona to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final.

Barca led after just eight minutes as Patri Guijarro played in Esmee Brugts, whose cross was volleyed home by Ewa Pajor past goalkeeper Ena Mahmutovic.

Bayern threatened close to half-time, but Franziska Kett’s strike was met by a flying save from Cata Coll.

Vanessa Gilles nodded the ball off the goal line to keep out Patri Guijarro’s header for Barcelona.

Bayern equalised on a sweeping attack after the hour mark as Pernille Harder picked out Kitt to rifle her shot into the back of the net, delighting most of the 31,000 crowd at the Allianz Arena.

Ten minutes later, Kett received a red card for pulling Salma Paralluelo by her hair, and Bayern boss Jose Barcala was also dismissed from the bench.

Mahmutovic tipped away a powerful strike from Mapi Leon and Paralluelo blazed over the bar as Bayern held out for a draw.

The second leg is at Camp Nou on Sunday, 3 May at 3.30pm BST.
