Mariona Caldentey won an early penalty but out the spot-kick wide, Swiss goalkeeper Livia Peng repelled a free kick from Claudia Pina.
Irene Paredes headed against the post late in the first half, as the host nation kept it goalless at the break.
Spain were denied by the woodwork twice moments apart, first with a Patri Guijarro header then hitting the other upright with Esther Gonzalez close to scoring.
The breakthrough came shortly after the introduction of Athenea del Castillo, who was played in by Aitana Bonmati.
Claudia Pina picked up the ball 20 yards out and fired into the top corner to double the lead.
Spain had a second penalty for Iman Beney’s challenge on Del Castillo but Alexia Putellas’s strike was turned away by Peng.
Noelle Maritz was sent off in added time when taking down Salma Paralluelo, who would have been through on goal.
