South Korea’s 3-3 draw with Australia saw them top AFC Women’s Asian Cup Group A in front of over 60,000 in Sydney.
Australia passed up a couple of early chances and were hit on the break by South Korea, as Jeon Yu-Gyeong crossed perfectly for Mun Eun-Ju to stab home.
Steph Catley had to come off inside 20 minutes after taking a powerful cross to the back of the head.
Alanna Kennedy equalized after a corner, bundling a shot from Mary Fowler in off the goalkeeper.
The Matildas had turned the game around by first-half added time, when Caitlin Foord picked out Sam Kerr to sweep a first-time effort into the net.
The game swung back in Korea’s favor before the hour mark as Kim Shin-Ji scored from the spot and substitute Kang Chae-Rim fired past Mackenzie Arnold.
Kennedy denied South Korea the victory deep into added time, but the hosts had to settle for second place in the group.
The Philippines finished third with a 2-0 victory over Iran and must wait to see if they qualify for the quarter-finals.
They took the lead against Iran just after the half-hour mark through Sara Eggesvik and Chandler McDaniel added an 82nd-minute goal.
