History of She Kicks
She Kicks began life as On the Ball Magazine in 1996 as the UK’s first dedicated women’s football magazine, created at a time when the women’s game received little mainstream media attention and had limited commercial backing. The magazine was established with the purpose of giving women’s and girls’ football a consistent, professional media platform — one that treated the game, its players, and its supporters with the same seriousness and respect afforded to the men’s game. In 2002 On the Ball was renamed She Kicks.
Over more than two decades, She Kicks documented the growth of women’s football in the UK and internationally, covering grassroots development, domestic leagues, international tournaments, and the rise of the England women’s national team. It became a trusted voice within the sport, read by players, coaches, clubs, administrators, and fans, and built an extensive editorial archive that reflects the modern history of the women’s game.
In 2025, following its continued expansion and the accelerating growth of women’s football, She Kicks evolved into Her Goal Magazine — a rebrand designed to reflect the scale, ambition, and global future of the sport while preserving the publication’s original mission and editorial values.
Today, the full editorial legacy of She Kicks, established in 2002, continues under the banner of Her Goal Magazine, the UK’s leading women’s football publication.
Why the rebrand happened
Quite simply, the She Kicks digital content providers went their separate ways from She Kicks, the printed magazine. 😢😢
For obvious reasons, it was necessary to change the name of our women’s football magazine.
