Scotland are down after a 1-0 home loss to Austria, their fifth defeat in five UEFA Women’s Nations League Group A1 games.

Lee Gibson did well to turn behind an effort from Verena Hanshaw, Erin Cuthbert was unable to make the most of an opportunity for Scotland, while Annabel Schasching blasted over the top for the visitors.

An outstretched boot of Gibson prevented Sarah Puntigam from scoring, then the bar came to Scotland’s rescue as Julia Hickelsberger connected with a volley.

But from Schasching’s 62nd-minute corner, Hickelsberger rose to head home and break the deadlock.

Gibson twice denied Hickelsberger a second, while Sophie Howard had to make a clearance off the line.

Kirsty Howat could not quite get the ball over the line from a Martha Thomas header, then later saw her strike come back off the bar.
