Republic of Ireland Women pulled off a 3-2 win over the Netherlands to boost their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

Although Carla Ward’s side have to beat France in Grenoble on Tuesday to directly qualify, they have otherwise secured a seeded spot in the autumn play-offs.

Abbie Larkin set up Kyra Carusa to open the scoring for the Irish, Lynn Wilms hit the crossbar in response.

Courtney Brosnan denied Lineth Beerensteyn from point-blank range and tipped over a strike from Jackie Groenen, before the latter was brought down in the area by Aoife Mannion and Dominique Janssen converted the resulting spot-kick.

Moments later, Ireland restored their advantage when Marissa Sheva crossed for Larkin to beat Liz Kop with a deflected effort.

Victoria Pelova got the Dutch back on level terms again, then in the 89th minute Anna Patten flicked on a corner and Amber Barrett finished at the far post.

Leanne Kiernan was shown two quick yellow cards, but Ireland’s ten held out for a famous victory watched by a crowd of 12,569 at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
