Lucia Kendall goal set England Women on the way to a 2-0 victory over Ghana in front of more than 20,000 fans at St Mary’s Stadium.

Kendall gave the Lionesses a sixth-minute lead after Chloe Kelly’s cross wasn’t dealt with by the defence and fell nicely for her to slot home.

Kelly sent a glorious chance of her own over the bar from right in front of the goal, while Kendall’s header from a Taylor Hinds corner clipped the top of the crossbar.

Lucy Bronze watched her diving header bounce off the bar, which was hit again shortly after by another headed effort from Aggie Beever-Jones.

Cynthia Konlan did well to turn an Alessia Russo effort around the post, Russo saw her deflected header hit the upright during added time off a handball – confirmed after a VAR check.

Russo took the spot-kick herself and fired it into the corner of the net for a 2-0 result.
