London City Lionesses cruised to a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in the opening match of the 2026/27 Barclays WSL season.
The first goal of the WSL campaign came in just nine minutes, as under pressure from Alanna Kennedy, United’s Julia Zigiotti Olme turned Janni Thomsen’s corner into her own net.
Rosa Kafaji was a firm touch away from doubling the lead from just three yards out.
Early in the second half, Phallon Tullis-Joyce did well to push Kennedy’s 20-yard strike around the post.
City lost Lucia Corrales to injury, and she had to be stretchered off going into the last quarter of the game.
But the hosts had their second goal with eight minutes of the 90 to play, as Delphine Cascarino’s ball into the six-yard box was directed in off the far post by a backflick from Danielle van de Donk.
Simi Awujo scored a consolation goal for the visitors with nearly the last kick of the match.
