Athlone Town Women have appointed Lily Agg as their new Head Coach on a full-time basis, with a two-and-a-half-year deal.

She joins the League of Ireland Women’s Premier Division side with them second in the table and chasing a hat-trick of league titles in three years.

They made their debut in the UEFA Women’s Champions League this season and bowed out to Red Star Belgrade in a second qualifying round third-place playoff, before ending a first European adventure against Glasgow City in the Europa Cup.

Agg is a Republic of Ireland international midfielder who played for Durham in WSL 2 this season, on loan from Birmingham City.

Well-travelled during her senior playing career, she also had spells at Brighton, London Bees, Millwall Lionesses, Cardiff Met, Bristol City, FFC Frankfurt, Charlton Athletic, and London City Lionesses.

Technical Director Brian Shelley told athlonetownafc.ie: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Lily to Athlone Town AFC. Throughout the process, Lily stood out through her professionalism, standards, ambition, and clear vision for how she wants her teams to play and develop. We believe she is an outstanding appointment for our football club.

“This is a significant moment for Athlone Town AFC. Appointing a full-time Women’s Head Coach on a long-term agreement demonstrates the ambition, stability, and commitment we have towards building something special within the women’s programme.”

CEO Steven Gray remarked: “Her ambition, knowledge, energy and attention to detail is exactly what we are looking for. She will lead the group with heart, class and expertise. We cannot wait to get her in the building.”

Agg commented: “I’m beyond excited to be joining Athlone. From the very first conversations with Steven and Brian I was so impressed with the club’s ambitions and can’t wait to join this incredible team.”
