Wales scored their first goal at a major tournament to level against France but lost the UEFA Women’s EURO Group D game 4-1.

Clara Mateo gave France an early lead following a corner, which Angharad James was unable to clear.

Jess Fishlock poked home the equaliser assisted by Ceri Holland, the goal standing after a VAR check for offside.

France were back in front in first-half stoppage time, Holland conceding a penalty for her challenge on Mateo and Kadidiatou Diani’s spot-kick only rolling in off the boot of goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel.

Middleton-Patel had a horrible moment when Mateo took the ball of her and set up Amel Majri to make it 3-1.

Grace Geyoro steered in a cross from Diani for 4-1, the French late on surviving a goalmouth scramble as Wales sought a second goal.
