The England Women Under-23s kicked off their European title defence with a 2-0 defeat to Norway.
The match was played in front of a record attendance for an England WU23 game of 3,108 fans at York City.
The visitors took the lead in the eighth minute after a swift counter-attack, with Cille Nilsen sending Thea Kyvåg down the flank to deliver a perfect far-post pass for Ronja Foss Arnesen to tap in.
Georgia Mullett, who was denied by goalkeeper Emma Andrea Ronning, also played a role in the move as Lexi Lloyd-Smith’s goalbound shot was blocked.
Norway doubled their lead midway through the second half when Josefine Birkelund powered in a header from a corner.
England were unable to get a goal back, but Naomi Layzell forced a smart save from the goalkeeper, who made a double save from Sophie Harwood and Lily Murphy’s follow-up, before Lenna Gunning-Williams fired narrowly wide in added time.
Lydia Bedford’s team faces more games in their group against Belgium, Portugal, and Italy.
