England make winning start at UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship

England came from behind to begin the UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship in Poland with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands.

Group A: Poland 1-1 Italy, France 3-0 Sweden

Group B: England 2-1 Netherlands, Portugal 0-2 Spain

Rachel Maltby was denied a third-minute goal for the Young Lionesses, striking the post from the edge of the box.

Mari Ward also had an early go at goal, forcing a save from Danae van der Vliet.

Close to half-time, Zoe Zuidberg picked up a loose ball and found the net from distance with the Netherlands’ first effort of the match.

Zuidberg nearer took advantage of another error right at the start of the second half but Katie Cox made the save.

Katie Reid saw her shot blocked from a 49th-minute corner but Princess Ademiluyi forced the rebound over the line for the equaliser.

Five minutes later and England had turned the game round, Ademiluyi forcing an own-goal from Olivia Rademaker.

Jessie Gale replaced Ademiluyi and had a shot saved, moments later Mirte van Koppen was thwarted by Cox at the other end.

England next play Portugal on Wednesday, kick-off 4pm BST and live on BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport Website and UEFA.tv (in most territories).
