England beat Sweden 3-2 on penalties in sudden death at the UEFA Women’s EURO and will play Italy in the semi-final on Tuesday.

Lauren Hemp was close to a swift reply but her effort was helped onto the crossbar by goalkeeper Jennifer Falk.

Defensive errors in the opening minutes cost England as Kosovare Asllani finished clinically and only a crucial Leah Williamson interception prevented Stina Blackstenius from getting a quick second.

Julie Zigiotti Olme sent Blackstenius away and with Jess Carter unable to catch her, she slotted the Swedes into a 2-0 lead after 25 minutes.

Hannah Hampton kept her side in it during first-half added time, turning a shot wide from Fridolina Rolfo, then saved from Blackstenius after the restart.

Hemp headed wide from a Lauren James cross, Ella Toone was free in the box opted not to shoot but then on came Chloe Kelly to great effect.

Lucy Bronze met Kelly’s cross at the far post to head home, seconds later Beth Mead nodded down another Kelly delivery and Michelle Agyemang equalised.

Hampton came to the rescue again by saving from Madelen Janogy after another defensive mistake, Alessia Russo’s stoppage-time shot was blocked for a corner but extra-time it was to be.

In the second half of extra time, Niamh Charles deflected a Lina Hurtig goalbound header over the bar, while Russo put the final opportunity wide.

Down to the penalty shoot-out and Falk stopped four of them, but Hampton saved a couple and Bronze brought a lead in sudden death, as Sweden then missed.
