England beat Spain 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 deadlock in the UEFA Women’s European Championship Final.
Alessia Russo forced an early save from Cata Coll with Lauren James unable to get on the rebound, Esther Gonzalez then saw her effort blocked by Hannah Hampton.
Lauren Hemp pounced on a loose pass in the box but Coll turned away her shot, before Mariona Caldentey headed Spain ahead on 25 minutes from One Battle’s cross.
James wet off injured in the first half, Chloe Kelly her replacement.
Hampton saved from Caldentey after the restart, Alessia Russo heading England level from a Kelly cross before the hour mark.
Coll turned away Kelly’s shot, Claudia Pina came off the bench and soon struck at goal with Hampton equal to it.
Lucy Bronze had to go off in extra time after an earlier injury, Georgia Stanway likewise later but England held out for penalties.
Beth Mead’s converted spot-kick had to be retaken and was well saved, Hampton thwarted Caldentey and then Aitana Bonmati, Leah Williamson’s parried by Coll. Salma Paralluelo dragged her shot wide, Kelly fired home for a 3-1 shoot-out victory.
Before the trophy presentation, Michelle Agyemang was given the Young Player of the Tournament award, Bonmati was Player of the Tournament.
