Chelsea Women Edge Brighton as West Ham Hold Man Utd

Chelsea Women narrowly beat Brighton to move up to second in the Barclays WSL table, while West Ham held Manchester United to a draw.

Chelsea saw off Brighton 2-1 to move within 7 points of leaders Manchester City. Alyssa Thompson headed home a Sandy Baltimore cross, but Carla Camacho quickly equalised with a deflected effort from outside the box that deceived Hannah Hampton. Lexi Potter restored the advantage before half time with her first senior goal for the Blues.

West Ham frustrated Manchester United in a goalless game as they moved three points clear of bottom side Leicester City, but from a game more. The visitors slipped to third place and just three points in front of Arsenal, who have played two games fewer.

Newcastle United are up to fourth in the table after a victory over second-placed Birmingham City. Jordan Nobbs broke the deadlock for Newcastle just before the break with a strike from outside the box. The advantage was doubled by Beth Lumsden midway through the second half.

Sheffield United are a point above the bottom three following a 99th-minute leveller at Sunderland. Amy Andrews put Sheffield ahead early, but Katie Kitching equalised for Sunderland from a Katy Watson cross just before the hour mark. The Blades had Charlie Devlin dismissed shortly after, and the Black Cats took a stoppage-time lead as Eleanor Dale finished a Jessica Brown cross, only for Andrews to make it 2-2 from the penalty spot after a foul on Sophie O’Rourke.
