Arsenal Women came from behind to beat Lyon 2-1 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final first leg tie.
Jule Brand scored with the only shot on target of the first half, stepping inside Kim Little to fire home despite a touch from goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar.
The referee pointed to the spot after the break, but a VAR check showed Wendie Renard’s tackle on Little was legal.
Minutes later, another VAR check went in the Gunners’ favour with their goal allowed to stand, after Mariona Caldentey’s free kick wasn’t dealt with by goalkeeper Christiane Endler and an attempted clearance off the line by Ingrid Engen just went in off the post.
Lyon’s Kadidiatou Diani broke through and smashed the ball against the crossbar, but Arsenal took the lead in the last 10 minutes, with Olivia Smith taking advantage of a defensive mix-up to screw the ball into an empty net.
The second leg in France is on Saturday, 2 May at 2 pm BST.
