Arsenal Women had to come from behind to beat Barclays WSL newcomers London City Lionesses 4-1 at the Emirates.

Kosovare Asllani tucked away a penalty into Daphne van Domselaar’s bottom left corner after she was taken down in the box by Katie Reid.

Olivia Smith marked her competitive debut for the Gunners with a 25-yard rocket of an equaliser, going close to a second shortly afterwards, while Victoria Pelova’s goal-bound shot blocked by Saki Kumagai.

In first-half added time Elene Lete pushed away a header from Alessia Russo, who moments later set up Chloe Kelly to give the hosts the advantage.

A cross-shot from Rofiat Imuran came back off Arsenal’s far post but Beth Mead twice set up late goals for Stina Blackstenius and Frida Maanum as they settled the game with a 4-1 lead.
