Arsenal Women secured a Champions League place with a 3-0 victory away to Aston Villa in the Barclays WSL on Saturday 10 May.
The Gunners were ahead in only the fourth minute as Sabrina D’Angelo failed to push away a cross from Smilla Holmberg, giving Alessia Russo a free header that Noelle Maritz could only help into her own net.
The lead was doubled on 35 minutes, Russo turning provider for Frida Maanum to go through on goal and finish.
Olivia Smith was played in, but D’Angelo stepped up to deny her with a block, and the Villa goalkeeper dug out a Maanum header to keep the half-time deficit to just two.
Ebony Salmon hit the post for Villa shortly after the break, but her team soon found themselves three down as Maanum set up Russo to beat the keeper and slot home in front of a near-8,000 crowd at Villa Park.
The result, which ends Manchester United’s hopes of a top-three finish, moves Arsenal within a point of second-placed Chelsea, with a game still in hand at home on Wednesday against Everton, who are ahead of Villa on goal difference.
