Arsenal beat holders Barcelona 1-0 in the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final in Lisbon, adding to their previous European trophy in 2007.

Frida Leonhardsen Maanum was involved in Arsenal’s two big moments up front in the first-half, forcing an own-goal from Irene Paredes before being give offside, then seeing her 25-yard effort tipped over the bar by Cata Coll.

The Gunners had some nervy moments in their own penalty area, including Aitana Bonmati making space but her shot having the pace taken out of it as Daphne van Domselaar collected.

Barcelona stepped it up after the break, Claudia Pina’s deflected cross hit the face of the crossbar, Van Domselaar turned a Bonmati strike out for a corner.

Alessia Russo won the ball and forced Coll into a good save with her boot, moments later Ewa Pajor had a shot land on the roof of the net at the other end.

Arsenal substitutes combined to break the deadlock with 15 minutes to go, Beth Mead finding Stina Blackstenius whose angled drive hit the back of the net.

Barcelona could not find an equaliser and therefore nor a third successive European champions trophy, as an English side lifted it for only the second time ever.
