Interview

Wunder Berger

She Kicks, issue 51, January 2019 pp.22–27

Molly Jennens interviews Birmingham City goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger a year on from her thyroid cancer diagnosis, which she returned from within three months. Berger recalls starting out with the boys as a striker before switching to goalkeeping at sixteen because, she jokes, she had grown lazy at running and already loved diving and tackling. She describes signing for Turbine Potsdam at twenty as feeling she had made it, learning from Anja Mittag, Tabea Kemme and Maren Mjelde, and a French spell at Paris Saint-Germain that improved her distribution despite the language barrier and time on the bench. Berger deflects praise, insisting she is just doing her job while the whole team puts in a shift, discusses a first senior Germany call-up, and says she never considered England having lived half her life in Germany.
