England beat Germany 1-0 after extra time through a Fara Williams penalty on 108 minutes to take the World Cup bronze medal, a first win over the Germans at the twenty-first attempt. Silvia Neid says she is not surprised by England’s progress since the Wembley meeting, that they got better with every match, and that they really wanted this win, causing Germany problems especially in winning fifty-fifty balls. Mark Sampson reflects that claiming third place while finally beating Germany and finishing as the best European team are the things people will remember about the side. The team genuinely thought they could win the tournament, he says, which made the manner of their elimination crueller, and he wanted to show the world that everyone has tough times but dusts themselves down.
