World Cup Gallery: England 0-1 France

She Kicks, issue 29, August 2015 p.22

England open their World Cup with a 1-0 defeat by France, Eugenie Le Sommer scoring on 29 minutes. Mark Sampson singles out Claire Rafferty for keeping Elodie Thomis as quiet as he has ever seen a full-back manage, ably supported by Lucy Bronze whose tackling and discipline he calls outstanding. He argues the team defensively and the way they managed the game was outstanding, limiting one of the tournament’s best sides to three shots on target and a goal in transition from 25 metres, while conceding there are areas on the ball to tidy up. Philippe Bergeroo is satisfied with a win in difficult weather, saying England closed the game down but never really threatened. Laura Bassett describes being struck in the face. Readers voted Rafferty player of the match.
