The fiftieth Women’s FA Cup final, delayed by the pandemic and played before an empty Wembley, still produced a contest that took 120 minutes to settle. Sam Mewis rose to head in Alex Greenwood’s corner on 40 minutes; Valerie Gauvin equalised with a no-look near-post header from Izzy Christiansen’s cross on the hour. In extra time Georgia Stanway ran on to Jess Park’s pass to beat Sandy MacIver at last, and Janine Beckie added a third just before the whistle, giving Manchester City back-to-back cup wins. Willie Kirk called MacIver outstanding from start to finish and, for him, England’s number one; he said his players had given everything in the tank. Gareth Taylor praised the will his side imposed collectively, starters and substitutes alike.
