Winning Mindset (Dr Matt Pain interview)
She Kicks, issue 57, November 2019 pp.43–47
A five-page primer on what mindset actually means in football, built around Dr Matt Pain, sports psychologist to elite players and formerly the FA’s psychology manager. He strips the jargon back to a common set of trainable mental skills – confidence and belief, commitment and drive, concentration, composure under pressure, and communication – and describes the circular process by which individuals lift a team and a team lifts its individuals, or drags both down. He argues psychology should be a full-time role alongside strength and conditioning rather than a two-to-six-month pre-tournament bolt-on, and cites Jill Scott on how England’s scenario work paid off in the heat against Cameroon. He also takes on the charge that the USA were arrogant in France, pointing to Carli Lloyd’s visualisation and Christen Press and Kelley O’Hara’s meditation as evidence of the opposite.
