WeKick! with Whitley Bay
She Kicks, issue 2, April 2010 p.37
A WeKick! grassroots club profile of Whitley Bay, formed in 2005 to meet Whitley Bay FC’s Community Charter Standard requirement for a women’s team. An advert in the local press drew 20 players, among them ex-Scotland international Kirsty Hunter and ex-England international Aran Embleton. The club won every game in its first season, including a couple of 29-0 results, took the Durham and Northumberland County League, then the North East Regional Division One North title and League Cup in 2007-08, and has now recorded a hundredth win from 122 games. They sit top of the North East Regional Premier Division and face Newcastle United reserves in the Northumberland Cup final. Captain Hunter, 36, has 113 appearances and a club-record 165 goals. Manager Colin Philips, nicknames including Soapy Suddes and Lady Kay, and seventysomething catering stalwart Tommy complete the profile.
