Ward’s Words

Watford captain and Wales record goalscorer Helen Ward’s View From The Field column, opening with the flat observation that the whole world is virtually in lockdown and no sport is being played at all. She urges readers to stay home so that the NHS and key workers are not overrun, while offering football talk as light relief. Ward describes her Watford teammates keeping in contact through a WhatsApp group and Zoom video calls, challenging each other with games and training programmes, and admits that finding the motivation to train alone is not easy and that road running and pacing fields alone are back. She reflects on the disappointment of the FAWNL season ending with Watford mounting a real promotion challenge, and on Wales’ April and June fixtures pushed back to a hoped-for September reunion.
