Wait No More, With #SK74 (Editor’s Letter)

She Kicks, issue 74, July 2022 p.3

Editor Jen O’Neill’s introduction to the EURO 2022 issue is also a short history of how far the tournament has come, told by someone covering her sixth. She recalls the Hope Powell-led England side of 2001 taking holiday from work to represent their country, and the 2005 EURO in the North West being well supported for the time but far from a break-out event, with England out after the group stage. The change of scale, she argues, dates to London 2012, when she and Catherine Etoe watched more than 70,000 people walk up Wembley Way to a women’s game and could not believe it. July, she promises, will reach a new level again. She also flags the issue’s Football on the Brain collaboration and the FSA’s second Free Lionesses fanzine.
