View From The Field: Ward’s Words (Helen Ward column)

She Kicks, issue 35, May 2016 p.24

Helen Ward writes from a newly promoted Reading side that has gone from months without games to three matches in six days. She is candid about the WSL fixture list: after that opening burst her side face only one game in four weeks before another three in a week, an inevitable consequence of a nine-team league in which someone sits out each round, and worse for fans than for players. Reading’s aim is simply to compete and establish themselves, and she notes their nine-from-nine away record last season. She then describes Wales’ trip to Kazakhstan, the furthest she has travelled, where sticking to UK meal times and food brought from home preserved the team’s energy.
