View From The Field: Ward’s Words (Helen Ward column)

She Kicks, issue 33, February 2016 p.22

Helen Ward continues her players’ column with a piece on pre-season, the time of year she loves to hate. She describes the mix of excitement, nerves and dread, and the recurring doubts about form, selection and squad changes. She charts how pre-season has moved with the Super League into the dark days of January and February, and how six-mile cross-country runs have given way to football-specific conditioning at game speed, with the focus shifting to speed and sharpness as the season nears. Reading, she notes, were among the few clubs training before Christmas for what she calls a pre-pre-season, with internationals on a separate four-week programme. She praises Reading’s staff for managing training load, and picks Fara Williams’ move to Arsenal as the window’s biggest.
