#USAENG: USA 2-1 England
She Kicks, issue 55, August 2019 p.22
England’s World Cup ended in the semi-final in Lyon on 2 July 2019, beaten 2-1 by the United States in what She Kicks calls a dramatic, breathless, bruising encounter between two heavyweights. Christen Press headed the Americans in front after ten minutes and Ellen White levelled, before Alex Morgan scored on her thirtieth birthday and celebrated by sipping an imaginary cup of tea. The closing stages turned on two moments: Steph Houghton’s late penalty was saved, and Millie Bright was sent off. The United States held on to reach a third consecutive final. For England it was a third successive semi-final at a major tournament, and the magazine records the result as pain and pride in equal measure.
