A single-page report on the UEFA Women’s Champions League final at Stamford Bridge on 23 May, where German champions VfL Wolfsburg beat Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 before a crowd of 19,278. Wolfsburg took the European title at the first attempt, following 1. FFC Frankfurt, Turbine Potsdam and FCR 2001 Duisburg, and completed a treble alongside the domestic league and cup. On a miserable night an under-strength and reshuffled side defended with discipline to thwart Lyon, and when Laura Georges was adjudged to have handled in the box, Martina Muller converted calmly in the 74th minute, ending a two-year reign and becoming the first team to beat Lyon in ninety minutes in 120 games. Conny Pohlers became the first player to win the trophy with three different clubs. Lena Goessling was player of the match.
