Think Before You Speak, Chant Or Tweet (Editor’s Letter)

She Kicks, issue 57, November 2019 p.3

Editor Jen O’Neill looks ahead to a November stacked with occasions – a sold-out Wembley, the first Women’s Football Weekend, the Scottish Women’s Cup final – and calls this an unprecedented phase of rising attendances, participation, standards, investment and coverage. Her warning is that as the top of the women’s game closes on the men’s, some of the men’s game’s worst supporter habits are crossing over with it: criticism turning personal and directed at individuals on social media, and distasteful terrace songs that have no place here. She asks readers to think before they speak, chant or tweet, and to report what they see. The letter closes by explaining why She Kicks is backing the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation, founded by Stephen Darby – husband of England captain Steph Houghton – and Chris Rimmer after both were diagnosed with motor neurone disease.
