They Kick: Chelsea Women Supporters Group

She Kicks, issue 57, November 2019 pp.24–25

The Chelsea Women Supporters Group explains how it grew from a handful of people looking for anyone else following the team online into a community with a party bus, banners, songbooks and a youth crew in the making. Founded informally around 2014 and properly in 2015, CWSG picks out Emma Hayes for the time she gives supporters and for learning the players’ songs, and salutes Tony Farmer, who got this version of Chelsea Women off the ground in 1992. Asked who would win their own She Kicks award, they choose Yeovil Town for the way board, players and fans held together through several rough seasons. The group travels to almost every away game, splits the coach costs between everyone aboard, and says inclusivity is the point: newcomers are treated exactly like fans of twenty years’ standing.
