The She Kicks Locker Room: Game Ready with Megan Connolly
She Kicks, issue 52, March 2019 pp.50–51
Republic of Ireland midfielder Megan Connolly ended her collegiate career a National Champion with Florida State University before joining Brighton and Hove Albion, and she talks the Locker Room through her matchday routine. Preparation starts the night before with carbohydrates, because adrenaline leaves her unable to eat much on the day itself. She visualises situations on the field to music by Alicia Keys and Andra Day, which she says slows her body and mind rather than winding her up, and carries no lucky charms because she prefers to control only her own effort. Ireland games excite more than they unnerve, since the team is often the underdog, but the national championship final against North Carolina left her more nervous than she has ever been. Recovery is methodical: cool-down, foam rolling, ice baths, shakes and tea.
