The She Kicks Locker Room: Captain’s Chat with Steph Houghton

England and Manchester City captain Steph Houghton describes herself as someone who leads by example on and off the pitch, with a winning mentality and total commitment. She credits Faye White, Casey Stoney and Kelly Smith, under whose captaincy she played, with teaching her as much about people as about leadership, and says she has since developed her own style built on her own performances and on being approachable and honest. Leading England to the World Cup bronze medal is her proudest moment, alongside winning the Continental Cup with Manchester City. Responsibility does not stop at the final whistle: she sees supporting and advising the younger players as part of the job, and finds that it improves her own game.
