The She Kicks Locker Room: Captain’s Chat with Janine van Wyk (South Africa)

South Africa’s captain joined Glasgow City ahead of their Champions League quarter-final against Wolfsburg, bringing experience of the NWSL, the Danish Elitedivisionen, a World Cup, an Olympic Games and a club of her own making in JVW FC. She has captained her country since 2013 and believes she could lead a side with or without the armband. Her model, unexpectedly, is Roy Keane, whom she watched hold team-mates to his own standard and whose temper she admits she once shared before learning to manage it. Leading South Africa out at the 2019 World Cup, the first time in the country’s history, remains her proudest moment. A captain, she says, should never have an off day, and she makes a point of studying every team-mate’s personality to work out what makes them tick.
