Stoney Stays True to Her Roots (Casey Stoney)

A profile of the centre-back chosen by Hope Powell to captain Team GB at London 2012, drawing on interviews across her career. It traces belief growing as Team GB beat New Zealand and Cameroon in Cardiff then blew Brazil away at Wembley, and her description of being devastated, heartbroken and gutted after the quarter-final exit to Canada while insisting the players had made the country proud. She lost the England captaincy after Euro 2013 but played her part in the 2015 bronze and was awarded an MBE in camp, which she dedicated to those who supported her and to the players of 25 or 30 years earlier who put her generation on the platform. In 2016 she set up Danielle Carter’s winner in Arsenal’s FA Cup final defeat of Chelsea.
