She Kicks, issue 84, May 2024 pp.6–7
A tribute marking Steph Houghton MBE’s retirement, announced on 27 March 2024 after a career that made her one of Manchester City Women’s most successful players and a mainstay of the Lionesses side that helped transform the English game. The piece traces her journey from a Sunderland striker to elite England centre-back and captain, taking in five major tournaments, two Olympics with Team GB – including the unforgettable match-winning goal against Brazil in front of 70,584 at Wembley in 2012 – a Mundialito bronze medal, three WSL titles and 121 international caps. It reflects on how far the women’s game has travelled during her career, and on her enduring presence in She Kicks’ pages across the years, from breakthrough striker to England great.
